Thelma Boateng (1994)
explores the non-obviousness of everyday things. Food is a recurring theme in her work. Everyone engages in it. It speaks to habits, customs, and varies from person to person, household to household, and culture to culture.

Thelma translates this into mosaic: a classic technique that challenges her to slow down - each tile is cut to size. The use of materials such as the broken teapot of a friend, tiles salvaged from a demolished bathroom, or found tableware from thrift stores. In our fast-paced, throwaway society, Thelma pauses to contemplate the ordinary before it disappears. Through this, she advocates for a 'new materialism', urging attention to things deserving of it.

I make custom mosaic pieces on request — feel free to send me a message!
